Sitepal Avatars in Public Health

Dr. Brian McFarlin is an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston in the Health and Human Performance Department. He is responsible for designing and implementing teaching and learning technologies. During the 2006-2007 school year Dr. McFarlin implemented a SitePal speaking avatar as an informational element within the curriculum for two of his classes, Public Health Issues in Physical Activity and Obesity and Physiology of Human Performance.

Dr. McFarlin reported that grades were 21% higher in the classes in which he employed learning technologies, including SitePal. He also received praise from his students, who said that the SitePal character was a welcome addition to the program and helped to better their learning experience.

Synthesised Voice

Sitepal, supplies animated characters or avatars who talk with synthesised voices. The quality of the voice has improved considerably in the last few years. They are now almost human sounding and could be used (at least in demos) as virtual patients or other simulated characters. This could ultimately remove the need for actors and video shoots when creating multimedia productions.

You can modify the appearance of a Sitepal avatar by changing their clothing and facial features. Voice can be added from MP3 files, from a microphone or by text-to-speech conversion.

To register for the free trial you have to supply credit card details. You seem to be automatically charged if you don’t cancel at the end of the trial period. I’ll leave trying it until I really have the need.

Nextup also provides almost-real text-to-speech conversion in a variety of languages. Unfortunately the trial version does not provide the best quality voices which does not help to show ‘proof of concept’. Here is a sample from ‘Mike’, a natural voice on their website.
