Adobe Flash Catalyst allows graphic artists to be web developers by making their designs interactive. Designers with no programming skills can add buttons, scroll bars and transitions to a Photoshop or Illustrator image to make into it an active interface. Media and text can be dynamically read from a database to populate the interface with content.
Educational technologists and academics with a visual orientation could find Adobe Flash Catalyst to be a useful content development tool. Adobe Flash Catalyst is part of Adobe Creative Suite 5. Tutorials are available on Adobe TV.

Jonathan Grove from Futurate says : “We had a little time on our hands last year and developed www.oldmasterflash.com as an experiment in integrating web-based Adobe Flash with user generated content.”
I’d say they had a lot of time on their hands but if you like fruit and veg and think you could improve on the old masters, this is the site for you… |
While the site is meant to be fun … you can build your own faces from a selection of fruit and vegetables in the style of the artist, Arcimboldo… it does illustrate the ability of web users to create and publish their own images from a selection of components through a web interface. Potential teaching and learning applications include assembling equipment or body parts from components or more generally using a drag and drop interface to build a collection of objects.

At the ALT learning object showcase the seven best LOs (as selected by the judging panel) were demonstrated. The quality of the objects was excellent. It was interesting to see that the LOs were rather large (low granularity!) and all came with learning objectives, learning activities and feedback. Most were developed in Flash (one in Director/Shockwave) and were SCORM compliant. All had an attractive design and layout. It was good to see that there is still a role for instructionally-sound, professionally- developed content in this era of user-generated content.
