Putting Problem-based Learning Online

Recent UCD Large Class Teaching projects have been exploring problem-based learning (PBL). For example, Zoology took a blended, problem-based learning approach to help first-year students understand the concept of evolution. Opinions vary among experts as to whether there are one or more species of brown trout in Ireland. The students, working in groups, investigated data from a range of sources to present the case for one or more species.

Danny McAtominey of Netskills led an excellent ‘hands-on’ workshop on Problem Based eLearning organised by the UCD Centre for Teaching and Learning . He introduced ‘webquests’, where students answer questions by following links to websites. Simple examples, aimed mostly at secondary education, can be found at http://www.webquest.org/ and http://www.filamentality.org/. At third level, webquests usually involve analysis, reflection and critical thinking. Central Queensland University’s webquest on water shortages is a good example as is the UCD Zoology project on evolution.
